The Uptown area is a popular, hip and energetic retail and restaurant district. Well-known national and local establishments in the immediate area include Urban Outfitters, The Lagoon Theater, American Apparel, The North Face, Design Within Reach, Chino Latino, Paper Source, Stella’s Fish Cafe, The Uptown Theater and Lucia’s Restaurant & Wine Bar.
Located in southwest Minneapolis, the area has long been known for unique dining, shopping, and leisure opportunities, as well as a vibrant center for artists and musicians.
Area Features
Midtown Greenway
The Midtown Greenway is a rail trail located just north of Calhoun Square, and serves as a key link to the City’s trail system.
Used both recreationally and for commuting, the partially below-grade Greenway runs east-west about one block north of Lake Street. It provides cyclists, skaters, runners and pedestrians a virtually traffic-free route across the city.
Lake Calhoun
Lake Calhoun, the largest lake in Minneapolis, is less than ½ mile from Calhoun Square’s door. Featuring biking, skating and pedestrian trails, as well as swimming beaches, canoeing, kayaking, wind surfing, sailing and fishing, the lake is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.

Uptown Art Fair
Just outside Calhoun Square’s doors, the Uptown area annually hosts the 10th largest—and one of the most prestigious—art fair in the U.S. with 375,000 visitors and 350 juried artists from around the world. The Uptown Art Fair is the second largest event in Minnesota, second only to the Minnesota State Fair.
City of Lakes Loppet
The City of Lakes Loppet is a cross-country ski festival with race courses featuring area lakes and culminating in the Uptown area. With close to 2,000 participants, the festival spans 3 days and is a celebration of all things winter.
Nature Valley Grand Prix
The Nature Valley Grand Prix attracts the top professional cyclists from around the country along with many international stars and is a top-ranked stage race on USA Cycling’s National Racing Calendar. Cycling and sports fans of all ages will get the chance to see world class athletes race on the streets of Uptown, watching competing pro teams race around Calhoun Square on a course that comprises six tight corners.
