The First Annual Bikes and Bands Block Party

With all the changes at Calhoun Square over the past months we figured it was time we threw a party to break the new space in. So we’re excited the announce the First Annual Uptown Bikes & Bands Block Party, on Saturday, August 14, from noon to 4pm.

THE BIKES

We’ve got a motorcycle contest and show during the Block Party. Bring your bike down and enter one of six categories. It’s just $7 to register ($5 if you preregister online) and you can win $150-$250 in prizes from local favorites (like VState Clothing, Bay Street Shoes, Aura, Il Gatto and Uptown Cafeteria, Amore Victoria and Sheraton Midtown). Plus everyone who registers gets a commemorative Uptown Bikes and Bands Block Party kickplate.

Registration begins at 11am on Saturday. To preregister online, click here.

THE BANDS

We’ve got live music starting at 1pm:

1:00 – 1:00pm : Bryan Thuney
1:30 – 2:30pm : Dan Israel
3:00 – 4:00pm : Brass Kings

THE REST

There will be food and drinks from Famous Dave’s, Davanni’s, Summit Beer and Miller Lite. We’ll have events going on throughout the day, including henna tattooing, caricatures, temporary tattoos and other family-friendly things to do.

Brought to you by Calhoun Square and The Independent. Held within the newly renovated Calhoun Square and on Girard Avenue between Lake Street and 31st Street, the event will feature a variety of activities and entertainment.

Proceeds raised will benefit the Uptown Association.

New Neighbor in Uptown

We’re excited to see Columbia Sportswear opening across the street from us today.

The new 11,000 square-foot store will feature Columbia’s high-performance outdoor apparel, footwear, accessories and equipment. Their products are known for protecting outdoor enthusiasts from the elements, increasing comfort, and making outdoor activities more enjoyable.

They might not be able to loan us a cup of sugar if we need it, but we think they’ll be a good neighbor all the same.

V State Clothing opens in new location

A four-year tenant at Calhoun, V State (known for its cool urban collection of men’s and women’s clothing and accessories) is pleased to be in his permanent location as it allows him to get back to his boutique atmosphere. Owner Dan Vargas plans a public grand opening party on April 17th, 2010 from 7-10 pm.

Vargas forecasts the following summer trends:

  1. Cleaning up – fashion will not be so much graphic driven – people are paying attention to details.
  2. You’ll see more layering with outfits.
  3. Straight leg and skinny jeans are the style of the season.
  4. The slouchy top (circa early ‘80s) with leggings/skinny jeans will be in vogue again.
  5. Accessory wise:
    • for guys – less is better – go with a simple watch to accessorize a classic look
    • for the gals – clean and bold patterns are the order of the day – the color green is very hot

“We’re happy to be settled into our new space in Calhoun Square. With a shaky economy, it’s nice to have a solid business alliance that is committed to a mutually beneficial relationship, Vargas said. “The Uptown section of town is where our target audience lives and shops; I’m thrilled that our shop now more intimately reflects our personality while showcasing out excellent wares.”

Tomorrow’s Stars

Make sure to take a break when visiting the Uptown Art Fair and check out Tomorrow’s Stars Seen Today, hosted in the Calhoun Square atrium.

Tomorrow’s Stars is a youth artist program, helping young artists learn about money management and sales, and allows young people in the Twin Cities to promote their art in a fun and safe environment.

Kids ages 8-18 are showcasing a variety of art, including photography, jewelry, pottery, sculptures, textiles, and crafts. You’ll be amazed at the quality of their work – and their affordable prices!

You can help support these young artists on Sunday, from noon until 4. Happy Shopping!

Sushi Tango Expands Into New Space

Calhoun Square is proud to announce the expansion of one of its long-time restaurant partners, Sushi Tango. Sushi Tango’s new space has a sleek look with a modern edge, but will continue to feature local favorites – the sushi bar, a wide variety of vegetarian options, and the well-known green tea ice cream. “If you know sushi, we will have your choice on the menu and you will be happy,” said Tengo. “If you don’t know, you should order the Sushi Tango and we will make you happy.”
